Prompt

A prompt is input used to guide a generative model, including instructions and relevant context. Some models also accept images or other media.

Illustrative example

“Summarise this notice in three bullets. Preserve the dates and amounts. Say when a detail is absent.”

A useful prompt specifies a task, relevant material and the desired answer format. For a notice, supply the notice rather than expecting the model to know it. For an image, describe the subject and useful visual constraints instead of piling up unrelated adjectives.

Chat software may add role markers and earlier messages around your text. These need the model's expected format; Hugging Face documents chat templates. You usually do not need to type markers manually in a configured chat app.

Prompting is one part of the system. It does not install missing models, add a capability a model lacks, or prove output is correct. Keep a short baseline, change one instruction at a time and compare results. For exact facts, include the source and verify the answer against it.
