Provider links are ordinary links. Free local software still needs hardware, storage and setup time; inspect current provider terms before paying.
Turn the portrait into a cartoon first, then change the clothing in a separate edit. This gives you two decisions to inspect: whether the person still looks recognisable, and whether the outfit is correct. Asking for a new face style, pose, background and wardrobe together makes a failure harder to diagnose.
Adobe Firefly provides a browser route with a limited free allowance and paid capacity. A local Qwen editing route is included for readers with suitable resources. These instructions are checked against documentation; we have not generated a portrait, measured likeness or verified the garment edits ourselves.
Prepare a usable photo
Use your own photo, or obtain permission from the person and the image's rights holder. Uploading to a hosted service sends it to that provider. Check the provider's terms and privacy controls before using a private photograph.
Choose a well-lit, single-person photo with the face and the clothing area visible. A tight headshot contains no evidence of the person's trousers or shoes; an AI-generated full-body expansion must invent those missing areas. If the outfit matters, take or choose a chest-up or full-body photo instead.
Keep an unchanged original and write an acceptance checklist: recognisable face shape and hair; agreed cartoon style; correct garment shape and colour; acceptable neckline, hands and edges. A cartoon deliberately changes appearance, so agree which likeness cues matter rather than expecting a pixel-identical face.
For the browser entry page described below, Adobe lists JPEG, PNG or WEBP inputs, up to 100 MB, at least 512 × 512 pixels, and an 18-or-over upload condition. These are that page's documented input conditions, not universal requirements for every AI editor.
Free browser route: make the cartoon baseline
Use Adobe's photo-to-cartoon entry page. It documents upload, editing and download with an Adobe account. Free access is limited; available models and allowances may change.
- Sign in and upload the prepared photo. The entry route opens the photo in Edit Image.
- Check the selected model and that your account has access before running it. Keep the original framing for the first attempt.
- Enter a style-only instruction:
Turn this portrait into a clean 2D cartoon with simple ink outlines
and flat colours. Keep the person's recognisable face shape,
hairstyle, expression, pose and existing outfit. Keep the framing.
- Generate and compare the face with the original. Do not accept an appealing drawing if the required likeness cues are missing. Try one simpler style description before adding more requested changes.
- Download an accepted baseline. Keep it separately from the original and record the model and prompt.
The style description defines the proposed visual treatment; the preservation clause defines what you will inspect. Neither is a binding identity lock. This guide's prompt is a starter for a controlled comparison, not a proven likeness recipe.
Change the clothing without restarting the portrait
Start from the accepted cartoon, not a fresh text-to-image scene. Decide whether you need a generic outfit or an exact product. “Blue zip-up hoodie” describes a category; it cannot specify the exact cut, fastening and branding of a particular garment.
Use a separate request such as:
Change only the visible upper-body clothing to a plain royal-blue
zip-up hoodie, hood down, zip closed, no writing or logos.
Keep the face, hair, pose, background and existing 2D cartoon style.
For a localised correction, use a fill tool to select the garment while excluding the face and hair. Inspect the collar and shoulder boundary carefully. For an exact garment, use an authorised reference only if the chosen editor/model offers suitable reference controls; otherwise treat the result as a visual approximation. A screenshot of an online shop does not automatically grant reuse rights.
The ignored-details guide explains the difference between an editing instruction and the description used by a conventional inpainting model. Use the wording appropriate to the selected tool.
Local alternative: Qwen reference editing
This route avoids uploading the photo to a generation provider once the local environment is prepared. It has substantial storage and memory requirements; we provide no verified PC-fit or elapsed-time claim. Read the hardware answer before downloading large files.
- Prepare ComfyUI and open the official Qwen 2511 editing template. Use the native tutorial for model download links. The full setup and known filename discrepancy are also explained in the same-character guide.
- Put
qwen_image_edit_2511_bf16.safetensorsinmodels/diffusion_models/,qwen_2.5_vl_7b_fp8_scaled.safetensorsinmodels/text_encoders/, andqwen_image_vae.safetensorsinmodels/vae/beneath ComfyUI. Select these exact files in the subgraph's loader controls; do not leave its different default diffusion filename selected. Keep turbo mode disabled for the non-Lightning baseline. Open the subgraph and set itsLoraLoaderModelOnlynode to Bypass, as described in the same-character setup, rather than leaving an active loader pointing to an undownloaded optional adaptation. - Load the portrait as
image1. Disconnect the supplied second sample image fromimage2and leaveimage3empty. Replace the positive prompt with the cartoon starter above; keep the ordinary sampling branch for the first run. - Run Queue. Save an acceptable PNG from
SaveImage, then load that baseline as the nextimage1and replace the instruction with the hoodie request. Generate once and inspect both likeness and outfit before keeping it. - Save the modified JSON, exported PNGs and input/settings log. The local output location is normally
ComfyUI/output, subject to your configuration. The model card identifies Apache 2.0; check additional component licences separately. No weights or executable graph are bundled in our starter pack.
Paid route: when Firefly capacity is useful
Review Adobe's current plans and credit rules before subscribing. Paid access can expand capacity or model choice; it does not make this a different artistic technique or promise better likeness.
- Confirm that the exact editing feature/model you want is included, then inspect the displayed price, billing term and renewal conditions.
- Run the same style-first, clothes-second sequence with the same input. Record the chosen model rather than comparing unnamed “free” and “paid” outputs.
- Inspect each edit and download the accepted final file. Count unsuccessful attempts when assessing your actual expenditure.
Final checks and fixes
If the person becomes unrecognisable, return to the photo and reduce the style change. If the garment is wrong, correct that region from the accepted cartoon rather than repeating both stages. If the neck or hands are damaged, inspect whether the selection includes them and make the edit smaller. If an account reports no access, inspect the selected model and allowance before assuming the image failed.
Open the exported file outside the tool and check its dimensions, clothing edges and face at the intended display size. Keep the original, cartoon baseline and final version as distinct files. A successful upload or download would not, by itself, establish a good likeness; no generated comparison is claimed here.
Editable starting prompt
Adapt this to your input and the specific route. It is a starting point, not a guaranteed result.
Stage 1: Turn this portrait into a clean 2D cartoon with simple ink outlines and flat colours. Keep the person's recognisable face shape, hairstyle, expression, pose and existing outfit. Keep the framing. Stage 2, starting from the accepted cartoon: Change only the visible upper-body clothing to a plain royal-blue zip-up hoodie, hood down, zip closed, no writing or logos. Keep the face, hair, pose, background and existing 2D cartoon style.Take the steps with you
